By popular demand, Nick Noble’s nearly 500-page “Fences of Stone,” chronicling Southborough’s history from 1690 to to 1990, is being reprinted in paperback as a fundraiser for the Southborough Historical Society.

“There are 10,000 people in Southborough and only 1,300 copies of the book out there,” said Sandy Worcester, the historical society’s treasurer and a Historical Commission member. “We thought it was time.”

One thousand copies of the book were printed in 1990, Worcester said, with 300 more following a year later. This reprinting will yield 1,000 more books.

The printing was prompted by the numerous requests from residents, Worcester said. At the Southborough Public Library, Director Kim Ivers said one copy of “Fences of Stone” is available in the reference area, and three more are kept in the library office for patrons to use at the library. “We don’t circulate them,” she said. “We did, and they didn’t always return.” To celebrate the book’s reprinting, the historical society is holding a book-signing party Sept. 19 from 7 to 11 p.m. at Southborough Community House. The cover, printed on heavy-duty paper, features a picture of a stone pillar near Chestnut Hill Farm, said society volunteer Carol Turner. Musicians will perform at the party. Imported wines will be paired with foods from corresponding regions, and coffee, desserts and cordials will be available. Noble will be on hand to read selected passages, answer questions and sign copies of the book, which can be bought for $25.

The historical society will put on a multimedia presentation, featuring slides and photographs of scenes from Southborough through the years, and photos of letters sent to and from local residents during the Civil War. Money raised from the event and book sales will go toward the upkeep and maintenance of the society’s museum. It will also go toward youth outreach programs, including an effort to start a local history program in the schools for third-graders, Worcester said. The event is intended to be “more of a party,” than a fundraiser, Worcester said. “Hopefully this will stimulate some interest in the community,” she said.

Tickets for the event are limited, and available for $35, which includes a one-year historical society membership. They are on sale at Red Barn Coffee Roasters, Mauro’s Market or Southborough Historical Museum.
